Asian Total Goals: What Over 2.25 and 2.75 Mean

Asian total goals is an over/under market on the number of goals in a football match that uses three kinds of line. Half lines such as 2.5 always win or lose. Whole lines such as 2.0 or 3.0 refund the stake if the total lands exactly on the number. Quarter lines such as 2.25 and 2.75 split the stake in half across the two neighbouring lines, so a bet can win half, lose half or settle in full.
In short: over 2.25 is half on over 2 and half on over 2.5. Over 2.75 is half on over 2.5 and half on over 3.
The three types of line
- Half lines (1.5, 2.5, 3.5). No draw is possible. Three goals beats 2.5; two goals does not.
- Whole lines (2.0, 3.0). If the match ends with exactly that many goals, the bet is void and the stake comes back.
- Quarter lines (2.25, 2.75). The stake is divided equally between the two lines either side, and each half is settled separately.
The whole-line refund works much like a draw no bet market, where a draw returns the stake rather than losing it.
How each line settles, goal by goal
| Total goals | Over 2.25 | Over 2.75 | Under 2.25 | Under 2.75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Lose all | Lose all | Win all | Win all |
| 2 | Lose half, half refunded | Lose all | Win half, half refunded | Win all |
| 3 | Win all | Win half, half refunded | Lose all | Lose half, half refunded |
| 4 or more | Win all | Win all | Lose all | Lose all |
The pattern is that each quarter line has one "borderline" scoreline where the result is split. For over 2.25 it is two goals; for over 2.75 it is three.
Worked examples
Over 2.75 at decimal odds of 2.00, stake 10, match ends 2-1
Half the stake, 5, is on over 2.5, which wins and returns 5 × 2.00 = 10. The other 5 is on over 3, which lands exactly on the line and is refunded. Total return: 15, a profit of 5, which is half of what a full win would have paid.
Over 2.25 at decimal odds of 1.90, stake 10, match ends 1-1
Half the stake is on over 2, which lands exactly on the line and is refunded: 5 back. The other half is on over 2.5, which loses. Total return: 5, a loss of 5 instead of 10.
Under 2.25 at decimal odds of 2.00, stake 10, match ends 2-0
Half on under 2 is refunded. Half on under 2.5 wins and returns 10. Total return: 15.

Why bookmakers offer quarter lines
Quarter and whole lines let a bookmaker set a price closer to its estimate of a match. If two and a half goals feels too high and two too low, 2.25 sits in between. For bettors, the appeal is that the borderline result softens the blow rather than deciding everything. The trade-off is that prices on these lines are adjusted to match, so the softer settlement is already built into the odds, along with the bookmaker's margin.
Settlement details worth knowing
- Totals normally count goals in regular time plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalty shoot-outs.
- Own goals count toward the total like any other goal.
- If a match is abandoned, operators apply their own rules; some settle markets already decided, others void the bet.
- In-play totals are usually based on goals from the moment the bet is placed in some markets and on the full match in others. The market name should make this clear.
Common mistakes
- Treating over 2.75 as if it were over 2.5 and expecting a full win on three goals.
- Forgetting that a half refund is still a partial loss on over 2.25 when two goals are scored.
- Comparing prices on 2.5 and 2.75 directly without allowing for the refund on three goals.
- Placing an Asian line in a multiple without checking how the bookmaker settles a half win inside an accumulator.
Splitting stakes is also a good reason to keep stakes uniform. Recording every line in the same betting unit makes half wins and half losses much easier to track later.
Quick answers
Is Asian total goals the same as Asian handicap?
They share the quarter-line idea, but totals count goals scored by both teams, while a handicap adjusts the score of one side.
Can I get a quarter line on corners or cards?
Some bookmakers offer Asian lines on other statistics. The settlement rules work the same way.
Clever settlement rules do not turn football betting into income. Wagering is for adults only, should use a fixed sum you can spare, and is legal in some places and banned in others, so check before you bet.
