What Is a Lucky 15? Full-Cover Bets From Trixie to Yankee

A Lucky 15 is a bet on four selections that is split into fifteen separate bets: four singles, six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold accumulator. Because each of those fifteen lines carries its own stake, a Lucky 15 at 1 per line costs 15 in total. Only one selection needs to win for something to be returned, although a single winner usually returns less than the total staked.
The bet grew up in British horse racing and is now offered on football, tennis and other sports. It belongs to a family called full-cover bets, which combine a set of picks in every possible way.
How the fifteen bets are built
Label the four selections A, B, C and D. The Lucky 15 includes every combination of them:
| Part | Number of bets | Combinations |
|---|---|---|
| Singles | 4 | A, B, C, D |
| Doubles | 6 | AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD |
| Trebles | 4 | ABC, ABD, ACD, BCD |
| Four-fold | 1 | ABCD |
Each double pays only if both its selections win, each treble only if all three win, and the four-fold only if everything wins. The singles stand on their own. On an online bet slip, adding four selections usually reveals the Lucky 15 among the system bet options, with the per-line stake and the total cost shown separately.
The rest of the family
| Name | Selections | Bets | Includes singles? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trixie | 3 | 4 (three doubles, one treble) | No |
| Patent | 3 | 7 (three singles, three doubles, one treble) | Yes |
| Yankee | 4 | 11 (six doubles, four trebles, one four-fold) | No |
| Lucky 15 | 4 | 15 | Yes |
| Canadian or Super Yankee | 5 | 26 | No |
| Lucky 31 | 5 | 31 | Yes |
| Heinz | 6 | 57 | No |
| Lucky 63 | 6 | 63 | Yes |
The pattern is simple: the "Lucky" versions add a single on each selection to the matching bet without singles. A Yankee is a Lucky 15 minus its four singles, which is why a Yankee needs at least two winners to return anything.
Working out the cost
The figure you type into the stake box is normally the amount per line, not the total. Some quick arithmetic:
- Lucky 15 at 0.50 per line: 15 × 0.50 = 7.50 in total.
- Lucky 15 at 1 per line, each way: each way doubles the number of bets, so 30 lines and 30 in total.
- Yankee at 1 per line: 11 in total.
Thinking in a fixed betting unit helps here. If your normal stake is one unit, a Lucky 15 at a full unit per line is a fifteen-unit commitment on four picks, which is a very different risk from a single.
What happens with partial winners
- No winners: all fifteen bets lose.
- One winner: only that single pays. Unless the price was long, the return is usually smaller than the total stake.
- Two winners: two singles and one double pay.
- Three winners: three singles, three doubles and one treble pay.
- Four winners: every line pays, including the four-fold.
Some bookmakers add their own promotions to Lucky 15 bets, such as an enhanced return when just one selection wins or a bonus when all four do. These are offers with their own terms and vary between operators; they are not part of the bet's definition.
Non-runners, voids and each way
If a selection does not take part, it is usually treated as void. The singles on it are refunded, and the combinations that included it are recalculated as if that leg did not exist, so a treble becomes a double and so on. With each way, every line is effectively placed twice, once for the win and once for the place, with place terms set by the bookmaker for each race or event.
The trade-off in plain terms
Full-cover bets spread risk across combinations, which makes a total wipe-out less likely than with a single accumulator. The price for that cushion is a much larger total stake, and every line carries the bookmaker's margin. On the doubles, trebles and four-fold, those margins multiply together just as the odds do, a point explained in our guide to soccer betting odds. A Lucky 15 is a way of structuring a bet, not a way around the maths.
Short questions
Why is it called a Lucky 15?
Because it contains fifteen bets. The "lucky" is marketing; it changes nothing about the odds.
Can I build one from football matches?
Yes, provided the four selections are from different events. Selections from the same match are often not allowed in standard multiples.
Fifteen lines can add up faster than a single, so decide the total you are willing to spend before choosing the per-line stake. Sports betting is limited to adults, is not a way to earn money, and has different legal status from country to country, so look up the rules where you live.
